Hi This might be a bit of a stupid question but I've had nothing explained to me about steroid injections, apart from they said they could offer me one when they first diagnosed me. But I turned it down as the pain wasn't as bad then as it is now, and when I think of steroids I think of weight gain (I've just lost 3 and a half stone and am still losing so absolutely refuse to gain any weight). What are they like? Do they hurt? Is it worth asking for one? Does it help the pain overall or just in the joint you have it injected into? I'm thinking of asking for one at my next appointment next Thursday but I just want to go in knowing what to expect. Thanks Gem x Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

Hi Gem,
You can have steroid injections into individual joints and you can also have what we call a depo injection ,which is steroid injected intramuscularly, usually into the bum! I have always steered well clear of oral steroids but have had the injections without worrying about them, and have never put weight on with them, although I do find they increase the appetite a bit! The intramuscular injections help to bring down inflammation generally and in doing so usually give a lot of pain relief. When you have one it is best to rest for 48hours to get the maximum benefit and the effect can last up to 3 months, I usually find it lasts about 10 weeks. So go for it on Thursday, you should get some good pain relief from it, but remember when you start feeling better not to overdo things because the steroid only brings down the inflammation and doesn't protect against joint damage.
Love, Doreen xx

Yes I've always just had the bum one- that doesn't really hurt to have. Sometimes they work for me and others not! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Gem, I`ve had the intramuscular one several times into the bum, and the joint ones too. Like Doreen says, it`s best to rest for 48hours to give it a chance to work. I`ve been quite lucky in that mostly they`ve given me some real benefit - the joint ones are better if done under ultra-sound, as they are more accurate. The injections do increase my appetite - willpower needed there. I try to stay well clear of oral steroids. Take care, Kathleen x PS They`re not hugely painful.

Hi Gem
I had one done last January in my bottom. It was over and done with in a flash and I can remember remarking to the nurse that it didn't hurt much at all.
I was worried about gaining weight too but didn't notice anything different. But everyone is different, it didn't increase my appetite at all.
It took a few days before I noticed any difference but it did work.
It may be just what you need to tide you over till the meds. start to work.
Paula x x
Congratulations on losing three and a half stone, not easy I know because I keep trying and am getting nowhere.

Hi Gemma Dont worry about depo injections I had another one yesterday only 7 weeks after my last one as Im having such a bad flare at the mo! Starting to feel a little better today and slept better last night..I have never gained weight with them in fact since ive had RA ive lost over 2 stone and desperately trying to gain a few pounds! Theyre great for kicking in and giving relief in the short term while you wait for other medication to work.. Go for it! love Ceri xx Ps Doesnt hurt hardened RA sufferers!

I have had several depot injections over the last year. The last one was last week. It is not painful. I complained to my nurse that it was not going to help my weight and she said that you do not gain weight with the steriod injections, only the tablets.
If you do have one, remember to rest as much as possible afterwards to give it chance to work.

I had one when I was first diagnosed. No-one explained why, they just said we are giving you an steroid injection. I was still a bit shell shocked so didn't question it. It was amazing. You know how it feels when you pick up something which you expect to be heavy and it isn't. Well that was how I felt when I got out of bed next day - I almost bounced . I really hadn't realised how slow and creaky I had got until I suddenly wasn't. Unfortunately it eventually wore off but it was great while it lasted. Sue

hi Gemma,
i've had two steroid injections and the first worked wonders when newly diagnosed ...unfortunately the second didn't help.
but i asked the same question about weight gain as i also have lost a lot of weight and no way want to put any on and Rheumy Nurse said no it doesn't make you gain weight.
i think you'll benefit from it as you are so newly diagnosed,
Suzanne x

Hi Gem, I've had steroid injections twice but they didn't work for me at all.I didn't find them painful and I didn't put on weight. What did work for me was a six week course of steroid tablets. Brenda.x

Hi Gem, I've had the steroid injections and tablets and was woried about the weight gain too! Injections don't seem to cause any weight gain, but the tablets can make you feel hungry. Some good advice my rheumy doc gave me was....." it's only what goes into your mouth that can make you gain the weight"..... very true! Kathleen xx

Hello Gem
I had an injection in my bum when first diagnosed in May whilst waiting for the MTX to kick in, It really didn't hurt, but from memory it didn't last very long just a couple of weeks, but at that time the relief was wonderful, if only for a short time.

Hi thanks for all the steroid stories! That's sorted then, I'll ask for one at my appointment next Thursday and hopefully they'll be able to give me one there and then. I'll try not to get my hopes up about it working though then I'll not be disappointed if it doesn't work. Gem x Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
